Housing for All: We believe that access to safe, decent and affordable housing is a basic human right that should be available to all.

Human Dignity: We believe in the worth and dignity of every human being. We respect the people we serve and those that help us in this effort, and recognize them as our greatest resource.

Partnership: We believe we can best achieve our mission through meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships with others.

Faith in Action: We believe that faith is lived through action. Building on our Christian foundation, we serve and work with people of all faiths and beliefs in a spirit of justice and compassion.

Mission and Vision:  Our mission is to help people with cystic fibrosis. We fund research towards the goal of a cure or control for cystic fibrosis, support high quality CF care, promote public awareness of cystic fibrosis, and raise and allocate funds for these purposes.  We envision a world where cystic fibrosis is no longer a progressive, life-shortening disease.

Strategic Directions:  Our strategic directions provide a roadmap for Cystic Fibrosis Canada as we continue to deliver on our mission and vision and form the basis of our priorities in 2015 and beyond. Together, we have our sights are set on finding a cure.

What is PMD?:  Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD) is a rare, progressive, degenerative central nervous system disorder in which coordination, motor abilities, and intellectual functions deteriorate. The disease affects a covering that wraps around and protects nerve fibers in the brain.

One Family discusses their son and PMD:  In May 2002, our son Jacob was born with paralyzed vocal cords, severe stridor and an inability to swallow without aspirating. Immediately out of the womb, Jacob’s fragile body was blue and his chest collapsed inward as he tried to breathe. He spent the first three months of his life in Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children where he had a tube inserted into his stomach so that he could be fed safely without him having to swallow. Jacob’s vocal chords are paralyzed in such a way that he can make sounds, but he cannot protect his airway from food or drink. Initially, he cried when in distress, but otherwise offered no facial expressions. After 10 long months, he cracked his first smile! Today, he smiles and laughs daily. He is a very cute and happy little boy. Unfortunately, he still lacks head control and will likely never walk or talk. After many months of doctor visits and endless tests, it was confirmed that Jacob was affected with connatal Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease (PMD), a rare genetic disease.

What we are doing:  We are in regular contact with neurologists and researchers in North America and Europe. We believe it is necessary to create awareness among the medical community and the general population about this degenerative disease. In addition, we strongly believe that there are some potential treatment options that require specific study for PMD. Thanks to donations raised by friends and family we have already funded 2 studies to help us get closer to a cure. With continued support and encouragement, we are hopeful that we can find a useful treatment for children with PMD. We appreciate all the effort that has helped us get this far. KidsAbility  is a dynamic, multi-faceted organization that serves children with a wide range of special needs. This includes children with developmental disabilities and delays related to premature birth, medical syndromes such as Down syndrome, coordination disorders, and autism; physical disabilities such as muscular dystrophy, spina bifida and cerebral palsy; and communication difficulties in language, articulation, fluency and voice.

KidsAbility:  provides rehabilitation services for children from Waterloo Region and Guelph-Wellington from birth to 18 years of age. We are one of 20 Children’s Treatment Centres in Ontario and we are accountable to the Ontario Ministry of Children & Youth Services.

You Are Not Alone:  The Family Violence Project of Waterloo Region is a collaborative of agencies that provides wrap-around, seamless services to victims of domestic violence – all from a single location. It takes enormous courage on the part of a victim to just come through one door and ask for help, let alone to navigate a myriad of services scattered throughout the community. At 400 Queen Street South in Kitchener, victims connect with a person they can trust who will guide them through a number of services all in a caring and supportive environment. These services include having police trained to deal with family violence, personal counseling for adults and children, assistance with developing safety plans, shelters, crisis/medical support for sexual assault, financial counseling, children’s services, support groups, outreach services to the community, legal services, specialized elder abuse services, rural outreach services and specialized programs – all under one roof.
